A review on Adelante - Intern in Barcelona

I would not repeat this experience

While I was able to meet new people, if knowing now what I do, I would not repeat this experience and would possibly use another agency. While the agency in California was most helpful, the administration failed in Barcelona and my housing was not what was told to me in my paperwork. I wish that there would have been an emphasis in the fact that Barcelona does not believe itself to be part of Spain but rather part of Catalunyia. This proved to be quite difficult for my working experience and improving my Spanish.

Was this helpful?

    Program Administration

I wish I could seperate the two administrations. Californias office was amazing and I felt very helpful. In Spain, administration was not as such. I felt I was a burden to Alicia and that there was a lack of communication between her and Adelante. I was made to seem like the bad guy upon informing my work that I was to only work 20 not 40 hours a week. While Alicia said she had discussed the hours with them, they still were under the impression I was to work 40 hours. On top of this when getting locked out of my apartment, even though I had my set of keys, Alicia told my room mate and I to wait until the lady we were living with got home. This was not our fault and were bluntly told it was too expensive to get a locksmith. I do not feel as though our best interests were evaluated.

    Living Situation

Upon arriving to Spain, I was notified the lady I was to live with, had just canceled her internet service. This madr my first 2 weeks in Spain harder because of having to either travel to internet or pay for it at a local cafe. Following this, the lady I was living with made me feel extremely uncomfortable when she asked me if I had asked for permission to watch television one day. She also so much as accused my roommate and I of stealing her phone. Laundry was to be done on her terms as well as showering. I was made to feel quite uncomfortable living in this apartment and was accused of also breaking a vase. I would never recommend this women to be apart of this program.

    Cultural Immersion

I wish the fact that Barcelona was part of Catalunyia would have been more emphasized in my paperwork. It was hard to improve my Spanish when most everything was in Catalan. The culture also made it very known that while they could speak Spanish they did not appreciate me asking them to speak in castellano.

    Safety

I will admit at no time through out my program did I not feel safe.

I really enjoyed Barcelona and the people were very nice but some time not understanding. I was surprised by how many people lived there but ended up really loving it. The amount of shops and cafes was amazing, and of course I enjoyed the beach. I learned quite a bit of Spanish and I miss the friends I made there.

Adelante in the United States is a great program to go through. The only downside of the program was the communication on the Barcelona side of the internship. The contact in Barcelona seemed non-existant and I would choose to go to my internship for questions and help rather then my contact.

Adelante - Intern in Barcelona One of the best decisions I have ever made.

Adelante made everything possible for me. I had the opportunity to be immersed in a new, exciting culture and work with locals as an intern. My experience was invaluable, being challenged intellectually, emotionally, professionally, and more every day. I met some amazing people native to Catalonia and from all over the world.

This program placed me in a wonderful apartment with a great host, set me up with two weeks of Spanish courses to strengthen my skills, and the perfect internship working with the best people I could ever ask for. Everyone on the Adelante staff was so helpful and happy to answer all my questions, and were very knowledgeable about the city and what to expect. They exceeded my expectations - I recommend this group to anyone who is interested in studying/interning in Spain!!

My Adelante experience was all I expected it to be. The family I stayed with was super helpful and the kids living there took me out several times to show me how locals have fun. I got to skate a lot, which was something I really wanted to do while in Barcelona. The internship was slightly different than the type of work I normally do, but nevertheless it was quite helpful and I learned skills I can apply to my future design work.

I am pleased to say that Adelante has provided me with the most amazing experience. I was the lucky scholarship winner of a three month internship in Barcelona. Not only are my horizons considerably widened I've also gained some much needed international experience. My photography and writing portfolio is pretty impressive - even if I have to say so myself. Apart from that I've also made some amazing new friends.
