The People's Democratic Republic of Algeria is located in North Africa and is the tenth-largest country in the world and the largest in Africa. It has 48 provinces, 553 districts and 1,541 municipalities and has a population count of 37,367,226 as of July 2012 where 99% are Sunni Muslims and 1% are Christians and Jewish. The official language of the country is Arabic followed by French, which is considered as a de-facto co-official language, and a few Berber dialects.
The country's 4.3% of GDP as of 2008 were spent on education expenditures and has a 78.7% literacy rate. Education is compulsory for children aged 6 to 15. The country has 26 university and 67 institutions of higher education including the University of Algiers (1879), the University of Mentouri Constantine (1969), and the Oran Es-Senia University or the University of Oran (1961). read less
