Armidale is approximately located 567 km north of Sydney, 467 km south of Brisbane, and 179 km inland from the coast. With a population of 25,000 citizens from 53 different nationalities, the city showcases a unique blend of culture, natural beauty, state of the art technology and is diverse in terms of education.
The city was occupied with the Anaiwan people before the first British colonial settlement of New South Wales arrived into the area. It was first settled in early 1830s, following the earlier exploration of the area by John Oxley, and was named after Armadale on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The site was proclaimed a city in 1885 and is the seat of the Anglican and Roman Catholic bishops of Armidale making it a cathedral city.
The city is home to the Armidale Waldorf School; The University of New England, which provides the total tertiary education package and offers degrees in Arts, Economics, Business and Law, Education, Health and Professional Studies and the Sciences.
