The capital city of the state of Queensland, Brisbane has a population of over 2 million and houses the Brisbane City Council, the largest local government in Australia. The city borrows its name as well as the river Brisbane from Sir Thomas Brisbane, a New South Wales governor from 1821 to 1825. In 1799, the English navigator Matthew Flinders discovered the Brisbane River and built a settlement which was converted to a penal location for convicts. Later, these convicts were ordered to build infrastructure such as The Old Windmill in 1824 and other buildings. Today, Brisbane enjoys major achievements in culture, arts, economy, tourism, and contemporary life. The Economist magazine ranks Brisbane as the 16th most livable city in the world. Popular tourist spots in the city include the Roma Street Parkland, the South Bank Parklands, Brisbane Forest Park, the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, the ANZAC Square, and the World Expo 88.
The city has several colleges and universities such as the University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, Griffith University, Australian Catholic University, Central Queensland University, James Cook University, JMC Academy, University of the Sunshine Coast, and the University of Southern Queensland. The 2011 Shanghai Jiao Tong University China Academic Ranking of World Universities list the University of Queensland in 60th place while James Cook University and Griffith University are among the top 500 schools.
