Located in the state of Victoria, Melbourne is the second most populous city in Australia. As of the June 2009 census, the city’s population is approximately 4 million. Melbourne was established in 1835 and was officially constituted as city in 1847. From 1901 to 1927, the city was a temporary seat of government of Australia. Today, Melbourne enjoys the prestige in commerce, tourism, entertainment, arts, and education sectors. Melbourne is also included in the top 3 World’s Most Livable Cities since 2002 and among the top 20 Global Innovation Cities in 2007. Being one of the major business districts of Australia, Melbourne is home to towering skyscrapers in its metropolitan area which include the Eureka Tower (92 floors), Rialto Towers (63 floors), the Freshwater Place North (60 floors), and the Melbourne Central (54 floors) and Nauru House (54 floors).
Often referred to as the “cultural capital of Australia,” Melbourne serves as international center for culture showcasing major events, performances, films, literature, and the arts. Annual cultural events are also celebrated in the city such as the Melbourne International Arts Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and the Melbourne Fringe Festival.
Top performing universities are also located in Melbourne. The 2010 THES International Rankings listed the University of Melbourne as the best university in Australia and rank 36 in the world. The city is also home to the Monash University is the biggest university in the country. Other notable universities also include the Swineburne University of Technology, RMIT University, Victoria University, La Trobe University, Deakin University, and the Australian Catholic University.
