The state capital of New South Wales and the second largest city in Australia, Sydney is home to 4,575,532 inhabitants. In 1788, Sydney was first settled by the British as a penal colony under the supervision of Arthur Phillip. Today Sydney is hailed the 7th most important economic city in the Pacific region and it was ranked 28th in the world by the Innovation Cities Top 100 Index in 2010. The Mercer Human Resource Consulting and The Economist also include Sydney in the list of the 10 Most Livable Cities in the World. Considered as an Alpha + world city, Sydney is an international hub for business, arts, fashion, entertainment, music, education, and tourism. Notable parks and natural sights in the city include the famous Bondi Beach, Hyde Park, the Royal Botanic Gardens, and the Chinese Garden of Friendship. The city’s vibrant entertainment and music industry also contributes to its international status as global city. The Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Sydney Opera House are two famous buildings in the city.
