The city is located midway between Sydney and Melbourne, with a population of 46,735 people, the city is the state's largest inland city. It is one of Australia's important hub for agriculture, military and transportation.
Originally inhabited by the Wiradjuri people, by 1829, Charles Sturt visited the site afterwards squatters followed resulting to conflits with the indigenous inhabitants. In 1870, the town became the city of Wagga Wagga.
The city is the seat of a Roman Catholic diocese with its principal church being St. Michael's Cathedral.
The city's sole provider of higher education is the local campus of the multi-campus Charles Sturt University in Estella which was established in 1989. The Riverina Institute is a collection of TAFE institute campuses which has its headquarters in Wagga Wagga and the city is home to three of its campuses. read less
