We'll pass this standard application to the program. They can help you to continue the application process from there.
At Beam Reach you’ll study the southern resident killer whales (orcas), the endangered salmon they eat, their marine environment, and what it will take to save them all. Our orcas were listed as endangered in November, 2005.

While the killer whales are still around, we think it’s important to study their basic biology (like how they communicate). But we also encourage you to ask applied questions (like whether boat noise affects a killer whale’s ability to hunt) and to consider practical ways to help their population recover. In either case, you’ll use bioacoustic methods to explore your questions and help understand two of the major risks to orcas:
interference from human-generated noise, and lack of fish for the orcas to eat. Less
Beam Reach was a fantastic experience and an awesome learning opportunity. To be able to study killer whales in the wild and rub shoulders with leading scientists in the field was truly a fantastic experience. I learnt a great deal about bioacoustics but at the same time learnt a lot about myself and gained skills that will surely be beneficial in pursuing a career in the scientific field. Living aboard a catamaran, cruising the Salish Sea and st... Read more
Beam Reach enabled me to change my life in a major way. Never have I been able to focus so completely on a project and feel so good about being challenged every step of the way. My long term goal is killer whale research, but we all came in from totally different backgrounds. Being able to learn from each other, and see things with a fresh point of view sparked creativity and questions and added a great deal to the program. The instructors and ca... Read more

I was sitting up on the starboard bow seat and when they [Dall's Porpoises] came up to breathe. They were 3 feet away and it felt like I could reach out and touch them. Read more
[Beam Reach provides] hands on training in field research while also encouraging students to think on a bigger scale and to be environmentally responsible as both scientists and as people. Read more
Fred Felleman talked to us today. Man that guy gave some of the best quotes on the environmental topics I ever heard of. I will appreciate a lot of what he said to us. Especially this quote: 'Wildlife management has nothing to do with managing wildlife, but everything to do with managing people. Read more
As each wave came up from behind us we would surf atop it and catch more wind from our height, reaching peak speeds of over 11 knots. It was unbelievably cool... the whales taking a back seat for the moment to the excitement of riding the wind. At some point some one put a beach boys compilation on and general mayhem ensued. God, what fun we were having. Read more
We let out the sails and began our training in tacking. We were quickly involved in high winds and rain. It was so much fun! Gato Verde hit some waves that had the water crashing over the bow of the boat. Read more
amidst the chaos of the waves and rain, Laura (another student - and quite a cool one at that) and Val (one of my super awesome profs) decided to place themselves in the heart of the chaos by sitting at the bow of the boat in the trampoline net. Fancy this; a huge swell totally submerged them!.... but, just when you felt like a soggy pretzel, here come 12 or so Dall's porpoises riding our bow!!....I could look over the side of the boat and see th...
