Beam Reach was a fantastic experience and an awesome learning opportunity. To be able to study killer whales in the wild and rub shoulders with leading scientists in the field was truly a fantastic experience. I learnt a great deal about bioacoustics but at the same time learnt a lot about myself and gained skills that will surely be beneficial in pursuing a career in the scientific field. Beam Reach enabled me to change my life in a major way. Never have I been able to focus so completely on a project and feel so good about being challenged every step of the way. As each wave came up from behind us we would surf atop it and catch more wind from our height, reaching peak speeds of over 11 knots. It was unbelievably cool... the whales taking a back seat for the moment to the excitement of riding the wind. At some point some one put a beach boys compilation on and general mayhem ensued. amidst the chaos of the waves and rain, Laura (another student - and quite a cool one at that) and Val (one of my super awesome profs) decided to place themselves in the heart of the chaos by sitting at the bow of the boat in the trampoline net.
