RateYourStudyAbroad’s Travel Essay and Photography Contest Winners!

RateYourStudyAbroad is pleased to announce the winners of our travel essay and photography competitions.

We had 136 entries from study abroad students and graduates at colleges around the country.

Here are the results.

Photography Contest

Allan Comport, professor of art at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) selected the winners for our photography contest.

Travel Writing Contest

1st Prize – “Maid Man” by Adam Douglas, San Francisco State University ’10 -$1,000

After working in the publishing industry for 10 years, Adam Douglas decided to go back to school and study Japanese, having fallen in love with the country and its culture. He has made five trips to the country, including living there as an exchange student to study the language. He writes about his experience in Tokyo at a “maid cafe”, a type of popular new destination for young Japanese male techies.

2nd Prize – “Untitled” by Sinead Byrne, Bard College at Simon’s Rock ’11 – $200

Sinead is finishing her senior year as a theater major. She traveled to Ghana for her spring semester abroad last year with Global Routes. Sinead writes about her experience as an only child, raised in a liberal state, living abroad in the communal world of a large Ghanian family.
