Literally meaning “River of January”, Rio de Janeiro is the sixth largest in Latin America and the former capitol of Brazil. The city also represents a GDP of USD 201 billion, making it the 30th largest city economy in the world. Rio was Brazil’s capital from 1763 during the Portuguese colonization until 1960 and the construction of Brasilia. Internationally famous for its natural scenes, beaches, celebrations, and other cultural heritage, Rio de Janeiro is the most-visited city in Latin America. Famous beaches, natural reserves, and landmarks include the beaches of Barra da Tijuca, Copacobana, and Ipanema, the statue of Christ the Redeemer, the Corcovado Mountain, the Sambodromo, the Maracaña Stadium, Rio de Janiero Botanical Garden, Theatro do Rio, and the Imperial Square. Cultural events that foreign visitors watch in the city every year include carnival and parades such as the Cordão do Bola Preta and the Suvaco do Cristo, the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, and the Rio Fashion Week.

Rio de Janeiro has a well-developed system of education with Portuguese as the national language. According to a report by the Universidade Estadual de Campinas in 2005, Rio de Janeiro is the 2nd largest research and development in Brazil credited to 17% of the nation’s scientific production. The city is home to 99 higher learning institutions including the Rio de Janeiro State University, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Fluminense Federal University, Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, the Military Institute of Engineering, and the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics. read less
