What makes Buenos Aires unique?
When UNESCO named Buenos Aires the World Book Capital in 2011, it was confirming something residents of the city already knew: Buenos Aires loves its books! Nowhere is this clearer than along downtown's Corrientes Avenue. Bookstores completely dominate the blocks between the Obelisk and Callao, and each one has its own unique flavor, from encyclopedic collections of Latin American fiction to delightfully disorganized piles of used reads. Just a few blocks away, along Santa Fe Avenue in Barrio Norte, stands the cities literary crown gem: El Ateneo Grand Splendid. Housed in a magnificently restored turn of the century theater, its as beautiful as it is comprehensive.
But all the glitz comes at a price, so bargain hunters may want to skip on over to one of the cities two permanent book fairs, held daily in Plaza Italia and Parque Rivadavia. And those in town in April shouldn't miss the annual Feria del Libro, a sort of Detroit Auto Show for books that brings high-tech literary exhibits and deep discount prices to Palermos La Rural. And for those seeking proof that Buenos Aires really is the World Book Capital: the line to get in can be several blocks long! Less
