This traditional city depicts much of the splendor of Colonial Mexico. The sheer age of this city gives it an old world flavor, but the fact that so many of these structures were built to last has enabled a level of preservation that makes you feel you have stepped back in time. This is by no means to say that Merida still exists in a time warp; there is old and new exhibited in everything from fashion to architecture.
As the state and regional capital, Merida is a cultural center, featuring multiple museums, art galleries, restaurants, movie theatres and shops. Music and dance play an important part in day-to-day life, offering students free cultural activities every night and weekend, as does visual art. The famous avenue, Paseo de Montejo, is lined with original sculptures. Each year, the MACAY Museum in Merida mounts a new sculpture installation, featuring works from Mexico and one other chosen country. In 2007, sculptures on Paseo de Montejo featured works by artists from Mexico and Japan.
The Central College Abroad program in Merida allows for flexibility in course work for both Spanish and non-Spanish majors. The academic program includes required courses, Central College Abroad courses, affiliate university electives, internships and service-learning opportunities.
Just like at their home institutions, students can choose the right combination of courses to complete their academic schedule. Students normally enroll in 12-17 semester hours, including optional internship credits.
Students wishing to take more than 17 semester hours may do so only with prior approval from the resident director. Less

To truely experience anything you have to make the effort but sometimes the greatest things that happen are spontanious and unplanned. I can't say thanks to all the great ... Read more

I loved my experience in Merida, Yucatan. It was cool to learn about how the Maya and other native people's culture mixed with Spanish and Lebanese culture to form life there. The excursions were informative and fun and complimented my classes. My favorite was our week long trip through Chiapas. The shopping, the beautiful scenery, and many different Mayan groups made my week. My hostmom was accomodating and she often gave me opportunities to try... Read more
