Intensive Chinese in Kunming

Besides being one of the most famous study abroad programs CET offers and experience like no other.
It is personal. Every lesson plan and trip is created with you in mind. The professors work closely with you to make your learning experience most effective and to help you strive beyond what you ever could have imagined. Even the roommates are carefully chosen to make you feel at home in cultural immersion.
It is a network. The friends that you make in China both locals and foreigners are life long partners.
It is a new home. Most students that study abroad leave their host country feeling like they are returning home, but for CETers leaving their host country is like leaving home. CET helps to build those strong connections, and build in each student a confidence in speaking Chinese. Without the help of CET faculty and staff I know my Chinese would not have reached this level.

    Academics

Honestly, CET is one of the best programs out there for Language learning. After taking a language pledge and living with a roommate from the host country, your language skills improve by leaps and bounds. But be warned, this program is not for the lazy (the Academic rigor is what makes this program unique) be prepared for one of the most intense, challenging and fun learning experiences of a lifetime!

    Living Situation

One of the greatest aspects of the CET experience is that your roommate is a local Kunming resident. You have the opportunity to explore Kunming without feeling like a burden to a Host Family, but still get to experience that priceless cultural immersion! Plus when you arrive it feels like you already have a friend waiting for you there!

    Cultural Immersion

Because you live closely with a Kunming resident, they take you under their wing, helping you to experience all that the city has to offer. Often times they will invite you into their home to try out some traditional homemade Yizu (chinese minority) dishes, or invite you experience a more modern side of China, such as seeing a new chinese movie. You are sure to have a very diverse experience in Kunming, because it not only allows you dive into modern China, but also see many different aspects of traditional Han Chinese and minority culture.

    Safety

Kunming is very safe since it is not one of China's larger cities. There is a low crime rate and very few pickpockets.

    Food

Food is not included in the program, but the school does offer some meals for a low cost. They are delicious and always fresh! A great option for a student on a budget.

    Social Life

Living with a local has its perks! You meet tons of locals and have the chance to experience the real Kunming. But the academic rigor can sometimes stand in the way of socializing, because during the week studying is a priority. Weekends offer the most free time to hang out with friends.

  • City Life

    1) Kunming's most famous lake, located in the center of Kunming. Experience minority group performances, and even participate in local taichi and and dances. 2) Explore outside of Kunming! See Lijiang and the famous surrounding sights, this really is a cannot miss. 3) Eat Mixian, a local food similar to Pho. No matter what kind of taste you have the countless types are sure to make your mouth water. 4)Eat at Heavenly Mana on Wenhuaxiang: try the the "Kaixing doufu"! No place has fresher, healthier food, or faster service (good for a student budget, too).

CET Summer Intensive Chinese Language in Kunming Learn Chinese REALLY fast

Reviewed by Clare Eisenberg on .

This program is good for people who are committed to language study and want to learn a lot of Chinese in a really short time. You can't really slack off on your schoolwork, because you learn about 50 new characters every day, have a quiz every day, and a test every week. On top of that, there is a language pledge so you are only allowed to speak Chinese unless it's an emergency. The program is hard academically, but definitely worth it and there is still time to have fun and immerse yourself into Kunming culture. Each American student is paired with a Chinese roommate, which is a really cool experience.

Do a CET program. You won't regret it. Living with an actual local person was incredibly valuable. I'm still friends with my roommate from Kunming. She really showed me how college life there is. The language pledge is tough, but worth it. CET is the best study abroad program in China, no questions asked. You'll be with the smartest Americans and you'll learn the most.
