Also known as Peking, Beijing is China’s capital and largest city. Under various dynasties, the city was continually renamed until in 1949 when the Communist Party of China settled for the final name, also declaring Beijing as the country’s capital. Informally, others also use Yanjing, another popular name for Beijing as reference to the Zhou dynasty. Beijing is also witness to the creation of the Great Wall China as it stretches from the north of the city through the Mount Dongling which provided protection from barbaric invasions. Places of interest within the Forbidden City for foreign visitors include the Palace Museum, numerous imperial gardens and parks, the National Museum of China, the Summer Palace, and the Temple of Heaven which is a well-known religious site during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Beijing is also home to a number of internationally recognized universities and two national universities are Peking University and Tsinghua University. These national universities are administered by China’s Ministry of Education as well as various study programs from third-party providers that welcome students from Europe, North America, Japan, and other Asian countries. The QS World University Rankings 2010 lists Peking University in the 47th spot. The MINES ParisTech International Professional Classifications of Higher Education Institutions 5th edition also includes Beijing University and the University of Science & Technology Beijing in the 392 leading higher education institutions.
“A great place to live and study, have to make a lot of effort to integrate with Chinese people though as mostly foreign students,” writes one student (Intensive Chinese Studies) in his RateMyStudyAbroad.com review. “Your Chinese level will improve dramatically, so if you are a serious student of Chinese,” comments another from Princeton in Beijing. “I was able to really experience the culture and Chinese daily life,” sums up a study abroader (Columbia in Beijing). read less
