Sitting at the mouth of the Yangtze River in Eastern China is the city of Shanghai. It is one of the world’s largest and most important cities today due to its influences in tourism, finance, commerce, technology, and education. The origins of Shanghai can be traced back to the Song Dynasty when it was transformed from a typical village to a market town in 1074. Since then, Shanghai has been undergoing development especially in its economic sector. The city is also popular among foreigners and must-see landmarks include The Bund, the Pudong skyline, the City God Temple and Yuyuan Garden. Shanghai is the financial center of mainland China and also one of today’s cosmopolitan and progressive cities. The city was home to a whopping 23,019,148 residents as of 2010.
Shanghai also has a well-developed education system. The 2010 census report reveals that academic learning consist of 22% college students, 21% high school, 36.5% middle school, and 1.35% have primary education. The city is also home to prestigious universities in the world such as the Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, East China Normal University, Shanghai International Studies University, and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. Higher education institutions in Shanghai total to more than 30 colleges and universities.
Shanghai also hosts a number of international programs.
