Florence is a beautiful and historic city full of tourists as well as locals. Its difficult to immerse yourself completely because of the amount of foreigners, so finding authentic Italian restaurants and traveling to other smaller cities is a crucial part of experiencing Italian culture while living in Florence. It's a safe city and not overwhelming large.

CISabroad - Semester in Florence I learned a lot from studying abroad

Reviewed by Madeline Rasmussen on .

With a few minor setbacks, my experience abroad has been one of the best experiences I have ever had. While my 3 1/2 months are coming to an end, and I have the feeling that it is time to return home, I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. I learned a lot about myself, a lot about other cultures and I learned that I am a citizen in a bigger global community, not just of the United States.

Reviewed by James Hiner on .

Overall i enjoyed my time in Florence. Classes were interesting and cool, but i feel like teachers should have a better idea of how teaching is done in the U.S... Just for example, my Italian teacher, gave us tests and quizzes on things we never even went over i class. It was very frustrating because in the states, before tests our teachers tell us exactly what to study to be prepared. Housing was nice but could have used more amenities to make the stay more comfortable. Overall the program was cool, and i was satisfied

My experience studying abroad was the most amazing experience I have ever experienced. Sure there were some downfalls along the was but essentially it's up to you to either dwell on then and miss out on the important stuff or ignore the negatives and ejoy your time abroad. I was able to really immerse myself in the Italian culture and make the most amazing friendships that I never expected to make. After arriving at home I realized that studying abroad really does change you and make your appreciate life a lot more. Looking back at those four months I wouldn't change a thing, I gained more than I lost including a better knowlege of the real world and more of a positive outlook on life.

I had a fantastic time abroad. The kids and staff in the program were great, and the trips they provided were awesome. I especially liked the trip to Panzano and the vineyard, those were highlights of my trip. Everyone was also there to make sure things were going ok, which I appreciate. The only thing that I would say to improve is to have stuff continuously throughout the semester; I think the last CIS led program was to the Ufizzi in early March. If there were a couple more CIS led events in the last 2 months it would have been nice, but otherwise, on a whole, the program and my experience was great.

CISabroad - Semester in Florence Problematic Program

Reviewed by Joscelyn Stein on .

While this program had great potential it did not live up to it. While most things worked out in the end, and I did enjoy myself immensely, there were enough problems to make me wonder if I chose the right program. Prior to departure, there were several details that had yet to be explained such as class times and meetings, housing, and other various things. I felt like I had to pick up on a lot as I went along. Throughout the program there were moments where it felt like not everything had been fully planned out and we were just along for the ride. There were clear lapses in communication between CIS and FUA (the partner institution) which left me having to figure out lots of things for myself. In addition, I experienced major housing problems that were not handled in a satisfactory manor. When my roommates and I reached out for help, it felt like no one took initiative to help us. We were treated poorly by the housing department at the local institution, and despite their best intentions, the people at CIS were unable to help us. Having to deal with so many problems put a damper on my study abroad experience.

CISabroad - Semester in Florence Really do some research

Reviewed by Janna Nielsen on .

This program had the potential to be incredible, but it had many issues. Before I even left for the summer, I had picked this program because of the classes it was offering. They were cancelled and changed after my money had been paid. Following this, I was always led in circles when I had questions. Most of the time no one could give me an answer or tell me what I needed to do. Even up to the day I arrived I had no idea what I was about to be a part of. I felt very uninformed. The program had a lot of ups as well. We spent a week of very organized travel through Tuscany and we were helped by our on ground coordinator when we needed something. She had to leave after our week of travels though and I do not feel like we were treated the same afterwards. I really believe that one should research the on ground institution as we as the program you are going through. I had a great time in Italy but there were definietly times I was not listened to about many issues that arose. I probably would not recommend this program if asked about it in the future. You can make friends and have fun anywhere but it is not fun to be abroad and be a part of stressful situations like this program put us through.

Reviewed by Jillian Weyman on .

Once you're abroad, you don't hear much from CIS, they do not plan trips for CIS students or give you anything on top of what your school provides. It allowed for more freedom once you're away since there aren't tons of meetings or any added structure, which was nice, though I would have liked a warmer welcome since this was my first time abroad. At the end of the day though, they are sufficient with communication, answered all of my questions, and I had a great experience.
