Founded in 1999, the Institute has set itself apart with distinctive academic programs that allow you the to immerse yourself in Italian culture and learn both in and beyond the classroom. You should start getting excited about:
* An array of courses and an Italian-language immersion program - You can select diverse, unique courses that match your academic focus and general interests. If you want to learn or perfect your Italian, there's an intensive language program that will have you wooing Italians in no time.
* World-famous chocolate and gelato - Perugia has become famous for chocolate and hosts a chocolate festival every October. In addition, the Perugians have mastered gelato (Italian ice cream).
* Life in a college town and a cosmopolitan city - You will study in Italy's biggest college town, a city of approximately 150,000 people that teems with some of the country's finest cafes, restaurants, and nightlife.
* A central location in Italy - Perugia is only a few hours from Rome, Florence, Venice, and Milan.
* One of Italy's art and cultural centers - Perugia has a rich tradition of art and artists. Check out of the masterpieces at the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria, explore antiquities like the Etruscan Arch, or visit the beautiful churches and secular buildings that grace the city.
* Student activities and excursions - During your time abroad, you will have the option of participating in CISabroad social events, excursions, and cultural activities. We will have dinner together, go to sports events, and explore the city's historical sites. We can also help you arrange a language-exchange program with a local Italian student. Less
Perugia is a beautiful city filled with Italian culture. Much more than bigger, tourist cities like Rome and Florence, Perugia provided a more intimate experience for me. It is a charming and very historic city in the middle of beautiful countryside. The staff at the Umbra Institute were so helpful, and I had a great experience in both of my classes. Read more
Studying abroad in Perugia was honestly the best experience of my life. It's a small city filled with university students, so you're never far from something fun to do. At the same time, it's not like studying in Rome or Florence — you get the real immersion experience, and if you talk to someone in Italian, they respond back to you in Italian (which, honestly, is more rare than you think). I give my experience a 5/5; I have no complaints. Read more
I had a wonderful experience in Perugia. I felt that the program fully immersed me in the Italian culture. Classes were Monday through Thursday, so we had plenty of time to travel on the weekends. CIS sent Romina, the representative from Rome to take us to dinner the first week. She took us to the most popular restaurant in the city, Dal mi Cocco, and we had so much fun! CIS was very helpful with travel and finacial issues, and I appreciate their... Read more
I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Perugia, Italy this past May and June. I appreciated being completely immersed in the Italian culture. Information for getting around to different areas was easily accessible through staff members and info packets. The occasional "free-food" hangouts were also helpful! I will always remember those six weeks of fun and learning. Read more
