The capital and largest city of the Czech Republic, Prague is located by the Vltava river and has a population of about 1.3 million. Modern-day Prague is the center of cultural, political, and economic developments in the country. The city has been around for more than a thousand years since the Celts first settled in the area. Prague was also the seat of power of the Holy Roman Empire and during the Gothic and Renaissance periods. The city was also one of the focal points of the Protestant Reformation, the Thirty Years’ War, World Wars I and II, and Communist era.
A number of popular attractions are located in Prague including the Prague Castle, Old Town Square, the Lennon Wall, the Charles Bridge, and the Petrin hill. Historic areas in the city have been considered by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage Sites. Prague is considered a global city playing a major role in world economy that receives over 4.1 million tourists every year. Prague also takes pride in its important museums, landmarks, and well-developed education system.

Prague plays an important role in the field of science and research. 39 of the 54 institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences are located in Prague. Public universities in the city include the Charles University (oldest in Central & Eastern Europe), Czech Technical University, Institute of Chemical Technology, University of Economics, and the Czech University of Agriculture. Some of the world’s finest art schools are also situated in Prague: the Academy of Fine Arts, Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design, and the Academy of Performing Arts.
