Classes are taught at a major university, Beijing Normal University, for ten weeks. In addition to its course offerings, Dartmouth-at-BNU gives students the experience of a culture and political climate radically different from their own. Throughout the term and in conjunction with course offerings, trips are taken to places of historical or cultural interest in Beijing and vicinity. The participants travel for 11-13 days at the end of their studies along China's Silk Road (conditions permitting).
Dartmouth-at-BNU offers students three course credits: two credits for language classes at either the second-year level (Chinese 22, 23), at the third-year level (Chinese 31, 32), or at the fourth-year level (Chinese 41, 42) [advanced classes require a minimum of eight students]; depending on the student's level of proficiency; and one credit for the Chinese 11 non-language course taught by the Dartmouth professor in residence. Whereas Chinese 11 meets four hours per week, the language classes entail a minimum of three hours every morning (Monday-Friday) and are supplemented by afternoon tutorials. Less
* It was the most effective way to learn Mandarin, i.e., cultural immersion, weekly exams;
* We also had so much freedom to explore the city on our own, which was balanced perfectly with planned trips around China. Read more
The program is definitely worth it. The academics are rigorous, but well taught. The dorms are nice, but there were some maintenance problems. I wish we had more time to explore the city. Read more
This program allowed me the opportunity to explore Beijing independently, rigorously work on my Chinese skills, as well as travel extensively throughout the rest of China.
It was well organized and effective and I would recommend it to any student studying Chinese. Read more
I felt my language skills improved dramatically. The teachers were excellent, we really got a feel for Chinese culture and Beijing but it was an especially excellent year due to the Olympics. I would HIGHLY recommend the program. Read more
I would recommend this program if you don't expect to have lots of free time. The classes are about on-campus Dartmouth quality, so expect about the same amount of work, and not enough time to get fully immersed in the culture. Read more

Dartmouth has a co-op with Beijing Normal University for the teaching of 2nd year Chinese. Because the university maintains the program itself, the instructional quality and organization are excellent.
Students are accommodated in the BNU foreign students' dorm, so the living conditions are great by PRC standards, but there's less outside contact with with a homestay, although the program does organize field trips, etc. Good pro... Read more
The program falls prey to many other programs run by Chinese professors: the belief that rate memorization and class hours will foster proficiency or even fluency. Still, they actively promote getting out of campus by organizing engaging trips off the beaten path. Read more
