do not recommend

Despite my 'B' overall rating, I do not recommend the Dartmouth Beijing program due to horrific administration.

    Dartmouth has a co-op with Beijing Normal University for the teaching of 2nd year Chinese. Because the university maintains the program itself, the instructional quality and organization are excellent.

    Students are accommodated in the BNU foreign students' dorm, so the living conditions are great by PRC standards, but there's less outside contact with with a homestay, although the program does organize field trips, etc. Good program for language teaching.

    I would recommend this program if you don't expect to have lots of free time. The classes are about on-campus Dartmouth quality, so expect about the same amount of work, and not enough time to get fully immersed in the culture.

    The program falls prey to many other programs run by Chinese professors: the belief that rate memorization and class hours will foster proficiency or even fluency. Still, they actively promote getting out of campus by organizing engaging trips off the beaten path.

    Program coordinator was great but living in dorms with other Americans was not good at all. Academics were really strong but it kept us too busy in our rooms that we did not get to spend enough time with China itself.

    AMELL Chinese FS - Dartmouth should be an LSA program

    It should be an LSA. Living with Dartmouth students in a dorm doesn't really improve your Chinese. Otherwise good atmosphere, and well run.

    I felt my language skills improved dramatically. The teachers were excellent, we really got a feel for Chinese culture and Beijing but it was an especially excellent year due to the Olympics. I would HIGHLY recommend the program.

    AMELL Chinese FS - Dartmouth great for beginning Chinese students

    Reviewed by Victoria Townsend on .

    This program allowed me the opportunity to explore Beijing independently, rigorously work on my Chinese skills, as well as travel extensively throughout the rest of China.

    It was well organized and effective and I would recommend it to any student studying Chinese.

    The program is definitely worth it. The academics are rigorous, but well taught. The dorms are nice, but there were some maintenance problems. I wish we had more time to explore the city.

    AMELL Chinese FS - Dartmouth academically, and culturally, challenging, but one of the most rewarding 3 months of my life

    * It was the most effective way to learn Mandarin, i.e., cultural immersion, weekly exams;
    * We also had so much freedom to explore the city on our own, which was balanced perfectly with planned trips around China.
