Cholula, Puebla, Mexico: (W, S)
Cholula is a small city in the Mexican state of Puebla about 10 miles west of the city of Puebla and about 2 hours away from Mexico City. The city of Cholula has a total population of around 150, 000 and is divided into three municipalities: Santa Isabel, San Andrs Cholula, and San Pedro Cholula. One of the most significant religious centers of the pre-Columbian era, today Cholula has hundreds of churches and cathedrals such as Tonanzintla and Acatepec, the most outstanding examples of the baroque period in the Americas. Cholula is most famous as the site of the Great Pyramid of Cholula, the largest man-made structure by volume in the world. As part of the Puebla urban area, Cholula is famed locally for its lively nightlife. Its town centre and zcalo area are filled with a wide range of cafes and restaurants that are popular with young people from local areas and especially from the nearby Universidad de las Amricas, or UDLA. Nearby Puebla, with a population of 2.2 million, is located next to the famous Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes and is known to be one of the most important historical cities of the New World. Founded in 1531 to fulfill the European utopian dreams of an ideal city, it was named the City of Angels and inhabited by the elite of colonial Mexico. Puebla is especially rich in archeological and architectural treasures.
Mexican language study abroad combines classroom experience at the UDLA with extensive fieldwork through excursions (Teotihuacan, Mexico City, the Valley of Oaxaca) and programmed events. The program offers intensive courses in language (with emphasis on grammar and conversation), Mexican civilization, and Spanish American literature. Through direct contact with urban and rural Mexicans, the students become sensitive to another culture and more conscious of the realities of contemporary Latin America.
