The Davidson in India Program provides a great introduction to India, and roughly half of the participants choose to go back on their own within a few years. I did the program in 06, and we spent a third of our time traveling around the country. Through the extensive travel we were exposed to the diversity of Indian culture, and had the chance to hit up all of the major tourist sights. I loved the people in the group, too, which was good because we spent A LOT of time together. When we weren't traveling together, we lived together at the guest house of the Madras Christian College and took 4 classes together (independent of the college) on Indian culture and history. The program can feel a little insulated at times, so if you're looking for a complete immersion experience then this probably isn't the program for you. The detachment can also be an advantange, though, because India is a challenging place to live, especially for foreign females. For most of the people in my group, I think that the program provided a good balance of immersion and observation.
