Copenhagen has been Denmark’s capital and largest city since the 11th century. Copenhagen is also one of Europe’s major cultural, business, science, and media centers. The city’s international rankings include: the 2010 Forbes Magazine’s 10th most expensive city and 3rd across Europe and 11th rank in 2009 Mercer’s Quality of Living Rankings. Copenhagen remains among the most livable cities in the world as well as among the highest standards of living. A number of notable architecture and must-see places are within the city premises. These include the Amalienborg Palace, the Copenhagen Opera House, the Royal Playhouse, the Tietgenkollegiet, and the Sampension (the last three are recipients of the Royal Institute of British Architects European awards). Copenhagen also hosts a variety of annual events such as the Roskilde Music Festival, Copenhagen Fashion Week, and Copenhagen Distortion.
The education sector also plays a significant role in the city’s popularity and prominence. Among the well-developed higher education institutions in Copenhagen are the world-renown University of Copenhagen, Metropolitan University College, Technical University of Denmark, Copenhagen Business School, IT University of Copenhagen, and the University College Copenhagen. The University of Copenhagen is included in the top 200 best universities of The Times Higher Education Rankings 2010.
RateMyStudyAbroad.com lists reviews from international students in Copenhagen. “Copenhagen is perfectly situated in the middle of northern Europe to easily travel to many locations,” comments one student (Copenhagen Business School). “Danish families are very liberal and won’t keep you at home on a Saturday night, but living with homestay may mean a bit of a longer commute to the nightlife of Copenhagen,” describes another student from the DIS – Danish Institute for Study Abroad. Another feedback from one student says, “The coursework is engaging, and often involves interviews and community immersion.” (DIS – HIV/AIDS in Europe Summer) read less
