Located in the South of France, Aix-en-Provence is a distinct city-commune constructed over hot springs. Inhabitants in Aix-en-Provence are called Aixois or formally, Aquisextains. Aix-en-Provence has its origins in 123 BC when it was built by Sextius Calvinus, a Roman Consul. During the Middle Ages, Aix was the capital of the Province and in the 12th century, the city reached its learning and artistic height under the houses of Anjou and Aragon. In 1409, Aix-en-Provence was granted a university charter for the establishment of research institutes and learning centers specializing in various fields such as the Universite de Provence Aix-Marseille I (humanities), Universite de la Mediterranee Aix-Marseille II (economics), Universite Paul Cezanne Aix-Marseille III (law, economics, political science, and Aix administration), Institut d’etudes politiques d’Aix-en-Provence, IEP (Political studies institute), Lycee George Duby (international secondary school for English speakers), The American University Center of Provence (study abroad program for Americans), and Institute for America Universities (program for American students) among others. Aix-en-Provence is also home to a number of colleges, lycees, art and design academic centers that also offer international study programs.

However, another student from IAU France – The Aix Center comments, “The only drawback is that most of the courses are not in French, which makes it difficult if you are trying to become fluent in French.”
