Famous for nicknames like “the Illuminated City” or “the City of Light”, Paris is the capital of France. As of January 2007, the population of Paris has an estimate of 2,193,031. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, Paris was considered the largest city in all Europe. The city still maintains its old glory as it is one of today’s leaders in business, fashion, culture, entertainment, education, and the arts. According to the Financial Times, Paris is among the top three European cities of the future. Paris is also site to headquarters of international organizations such as UNESCO, OECD, and the International Chamber of Commerce. A number of architecture, museums, historical centers, monuments, and landmarks can be found within the city: Place de la Concorde (where guillotine executions are held), Place de la Bastille (site of most French political rallies), and the Champs-Elysees (one of Paris’ major shopping spots).
Before the establishment of the University of Paris, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame was the sole academic institution in the city. In 1969, the University of Paris was divided into thirteen autonomous universities: Paris I, II, V, X, VI, VII specializing in specific fields such as law, medicine, research, etc. Later, additional four more universities were added: University of Cergy-Pontoise, University of Evry Val d’Essonne, University of Marne-la-Vallee, University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, and Ecole superieure Robert De Sorbon.
