Munich has its origins in the Middle Ages when it was built in 1158. München or Munich remains one of Germany’s vibrant cities and is home to an estimated population of 1.3 million inhabitants. The city’s motto is München mag Dich, which literally means “Munich loves you”. This is probably the reason for the city’s financial and publishing success as well as top destination for migrants and expats. In 2010, the Mercer livability rankings listed Munich as top 7th most livable city. The Monocle magazine also declared Munich as the world’s most livable city in the same year. Famous people who were born and bred in Munich include musician Richard Strauss, writer Eugen Roth, painter Franz Marc, and Nobel Prize awardees Ernst Fischer and Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen.
The city also boasts of a hodgepodge of historic buildings and exquisite architecture. Among these include the Marienplatz (containing the Old and New Town Hall), Peterskirche (oldest church in the city), and museums like the Haus der Kunst, Bavarian National Museum, the Schackgalerie, Nymphenburg Palace, and the Nationaltheather. Munich is also Germany’s hub for science and research. Among the most important and prominent universities in Munich include the Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU), the Technische Universitat Munchen (TUM), the Technical University of Karlsruhe, the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, and the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München. Notable research institutes also comprise the Max Planck Society, Botanische Staatssammlung München (herbarium), Fraunhofer Institute, European Southern Observatory, and the Helmholtz Zentrum München.
