In May, the program classes are conducted online via the GRCC Blackboard system. During this time, students enjoy the usual flexibility of online distance learning courses and will complete key reading assignments and online coursework, view films, turn in written assignments, and interact with faculty and other students in the online discussion boards. By the time the group departs for Ireland at the end of May, students will have an excellent background in Irish studies that will allow them to get the most out of their time abroad.
During the GRCC group's time in Ireland (the first three weeks in June), we will visit both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, staying in South Armagh, Donegal, Galway, and Dublin. The program will also include trips to Belfast, Derry, and other cities. The GRCC group will visit and study Neolithic tombs, forts, medieval castles, cathedrals, monasteries, sites dating from every period of history, as well as modern monuments, cities, villages, parliament buildings, murals, and museums.
Along the way, the GRCC group pursues a rigorous academic program, and again students have unique opportunities to meet and have guided tours by people who experienced and influenced the Troubles and peace process, political leaders, community workers, police officers, former prisoners and hungerstrikers, and distinguished scholars. Depending on availability, we may have opportunities to meet notable political leaders such as Gerry Adams, Martina Anderson, Martin McGuinness, Connor Murphy, Bernadette Devlin McAliskey, Sean Farren, and John Hume, Nobel Peace laureate and architect of the current peace process in Northern Ireland. t is difficult to put together a combination of words to describe the experience that the Irish studies program offers. When I returned home from Ireland, I spent some time comparing ... Read more
By meeting face to face the people I learned about, I received much deeper and personal insight into the events and information I had previously collected from textbooks and lectures. The Irish Study Abroad program holds strong academic value. Equally as important, though, it also gives a complete cultural immersion; the extremes of social, economic, and political spectrums are seen through traveling to culturally unique regions of Ireland. Before arriving, I have to admit that I had some preconceived notions about what Ireland would be like. I was glad to find out that it really is as green there as everyone says. I can't say enough about this country's beauty. Not only the landscape, but the history in which I could see around me, the ancientness of the land was mesmerizing. For the first few days I kept pinching myself thinking, 'Mark, you're in Ireland' which said a lot about th... Read more
I remember thinking to myself, as I stared in awe at the vestiges of a fortress that had long since been bombarded by the merciless cannons of Oliver Cromwell, 'this is by far the most amazing thing I have done.' . . . for us, a group of lucky individuals who had been graced and guided with the wisdom, experience, and expertise of the professors who had brought us to Ireland, we knew that what we saw was grand and relevant even today. So there I ... Read more
