Greece is one of history’s cradles of learning. Education was first formally realized with the establishment of the Academy by Plato in c. 385 BC. Along with the Academy was Aristotle’s foundation of the Lyceum, which offered a broader curriculum. Today, Greece is among the new members of the European Union endeavoring for quality education. Athens boasts two of the best universities in Greece: University of Athens (UOA) and the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). Greece has a total of 20 universities located in various cities and towns. The Hellenic Quality Assurance for Higher Education is the country’s leading agency that oversees the quality of international and higher education among its universities.
