Athens is one of the ancient cities of the world with a recorded history that spans for about 4300 years. During the Classical Age, Athens was an important city-state and a center for learning and philosophy. Today, Athens remains the capital of Greece with a population of around 655,780 people. The city’s ancient heritage is represented by several monuments and other types of architecture—the most popular is the Parthenon. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites lists the Acropolis and the Daphni Monastery. The city was also the host of the first modern Olympics in 1896 and home to the National Archaeological Museum and the Acropolis Museum. Athens is also a thriving center for contemporary art and culture with more than 148 theaters and entertainment venues including The Athens Planetarium.
With its archeological heritage, Athens is the frequent destination of a number of international students, scholars, and researchers conducting archeological exhibits, lectures, seminars, conferences, and other studies in their respective fields. The so-called “Athens Trilogy” in the 19th century includes the University of Athens, National Library, and the Athens Academy. Other higher learning institutions located in Athens include the Athens Polytechnic School, the Athens University of Economics and Business, and the Agricultural University of Athens.
