The roots of education in Guatemala can be formally attributed to Justo Rufino Barios, when he took power as dictator from 1873 to 1885 and began to form a national education system. From then on, education has become a high priority in Guatemalan society. Guatemala has 12 higher learning institutions: 1 public university and 11 private institutions. The Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala is the first and oldest university in the country, founded in 1676. Guatemala has a regulatory body for private tertiary education, the Council of Private Higher Education (CEPS) to ensure quality in private university education. The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities has ranked Universidad Francisco Marroquin as the 139th best university.

Two students who participated with The University of Arizona and CIRMA program described their learning experience: “The incredible professors and the wonderful relationships I’ve made have expanded and changed (my) perspectives on the Guatemala, Latin America, and the world forever.” Another student from the same program indicated that “studying at CIRMA was the perfect balance between classroom learning and community involvement…I learned more by living in Guatemala.” A LeapNow student writes that “[LeapNow] is an alright program, and gives you views of different cultures in short periods of time.”
