Icelandic history of a culture of equality, tolerance, and old appreciation of learning is reflected in Iceland’s education system. The oldest learning institutions have their origins to as early as 1056 with the founding of two gymnasiums in Iceland: Menntaskolinn I Rejkjavik (1056) and Verzlunarskoli Islands (1905). In 1911, the University of Iceland was established, making it the first higher education institution in the country. The University of Iceland is also included in the top 500 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities in July 2011. Iceland currently hosts 900 international students per year. Because Iceland has such a small population, those 900 students make up 5% of the college population in the whole country! Today, 192 academic institutions exist in Iceland catering to compulsory education with 42 secondary schools and 9 public and private universities.
