The commercial and business center of Australia, Sydney is a sophisticated, cosmopolitan city that generates excitement and features a population that is youthful (47% between the ages of 20 and 35) and diverse (Sydney's residents speak 140 different languages). Sydney is also a major cultural center in Australia, offering a variety of museums, theaters, a world famous opera house, and several excellent universities.
Its stunning setting, sunny days, and mild winter temperatures, also make Sydney one of the most glamorous and attractive cities on earth. Its world-famous harbor, featuring scenic cliffs, bays, and beaches, is considered by many to be the most beautiful urban harbor in the world, and local residents embrace the harbor and the many outdoor opportunities it provides with passion.
The IES Abroad program is designed to facilitate the discovery and cultural exploration of Australia by providing an integrated program of formal academic teaching and informal field study. IES Abroad students also explore these issues through the orientation program organized by IES Abroad.
The IES Abroad Sydney program offers semester, academic year, and calendar year study options with direct enrollment in three of Sydney's major universities:
- Macquarie University
- The University of New South Wales
- The University of Sydney
IES Abroad staff works closely with the staff of these three universities to provide student services and organize orientation and field trips. Less
Studying abroad through IES was amazing. Our midsemester break trip to the Great Barrier Reef was the highlight of my entire semester. IES also helped me arrange housing in one of the UNSW Residential Colleges, which was an ideal experience as I lived with Australians who were friendly, welcoming, and extremely fun. Sydney is a beautiful city. I loved my semester abroad so much that I ended up extending my stay to a full year. Read more
Direct enrollment was very good academically and I loved the University of Sydney as an institution. Living at the Uni. Village in Newtown was perfectly situated in a hip, fun, suburb, but the units themselves were not good for meeting people and cultural exposure. I loved this program :)
IES is good Australia but Ive heard bad things about IES programs elsewhere. This one is good because it directly enrolls you. Read more
IES Australia is what you make of it. If you want the cultural experience, you may have to push yourself to get to know Australians because it is easy to fall into just hanging out with the students from your program. But if you want the full immersion, it's possible and a LOT of fun. I lived on campus with a ton of Aussies and had an amazing time. Australia is a beautiful country to explore - make sure you leave time for travel. Read more
