As the European Union continues to grow in size and influence, understanding the EU and the countries seeking membership, becomes key to understanding Europe and our world. With its central European location, the picturesque city of Freiburg makes an ideal starting point for the exploration of the European Union.
Offering extensive field study throughout Europe, the IES Abroad European Union Program allows you to experience first-hand the countries, institutions, and policies that make up the European Union. The program emphasizes the historical and institutional development of the EU and its current internal policies, issues of culture and multiculturalism, and relations with outside nations, providing outstanding academic opportunities for Political Science, International Relations, International Business, Economics, History, and European Culture Studies majors. Courses are taught in English, with the exception of a German-taught Political Science course. Less

This is one of the best programs for visiting a lot of countries in Europe. If you include Germany, the program went to 10 countries, including Latvia of all places, when I was in it. The downside is that they take attendance a little too seriously. To be frank, my university couldn't care less how many classes I attended in the IES program. Fortunately they don't have class on Fridays so you can do plenty of quick trips if you plan well in advan... Read more
I can honestly say that this program was the best experience of my life. The people I met will remain lifelong friends and the memories I made will never be forgotten.
Freiburg is an amazing town and is the perfect location for study abroad. My friends who studied in large cities wished they had taken advantage of a smaller city. It is absolutely gorgeous and there is plenty to keep you occupied. Further there a lot of great opportunities for... Read more

Academically, this program is far from death. Like most things in life, it is what you make of it. At times I put a lot of work into assignments and at times I did hardly anything at all and still escaped this program with a great GPA. If you have anything besides mush between your ears, you will do well in this program.

This program is terrible. If you wanna go and do work the whole time, this is the program for you. We get no weekends off and spend whatever free time they give us writing papers. The field trips do not give you any free time to explore the city. Basically, I had a misrable experience and everyone else in my program was very unhappy also. DO NOT DO THIS PROGRAM. IES ruined my time abroad. Read more
The instructors grade a little more easily, but the classes were just as informative and rigorous as my home university. The instructors all know English well. Research papers are common, and students will have to write a few small essays. Final and midterm exams are also regular.
Freiburg is a good place for partying. There are several dance clubs that together offer a large variety of music. Public transportation is also excelle... Read more
