Ireland’s history of education is strongly associated to missionaries who founded and maintained monasteries that achieved immense cultural influence. Officially higher education in Ireland began in 1592 with the founding of the University of Dublin (synonymously called Trinity College). Other prominent Irish academic institutions include the National University of Ireland, founded in 1908 and Saint Patrick’s College established in 1795 and an affiliate of the National University. At present, Ireland is among the countries with the most participation of students in higher education. In the 2008 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, seven of Ireland’s universities were included in the top 500 list: Trinity College, University College Dublin, University College Cork, Dublin City University, Dublin Institute of Technology, National University of Ireland (Galway), Limerick University.
