The origins of Jerusalem were first mentioned in the Old Testament by King David in c. 1000 BCE as the capital of Israel. Three of the largest and most prominent monotheistic religions in the world – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam – consider Jerusalem to be a holy city. Among the most important religious sites such as the Temple Mount, the Western Wall, the al-Aqsa Mosque, the Dome of the Rock, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. According to Eric Cline’s Moment Magazine report in 2008, the city was “twice destroyed, attacked 52 times, besieged 23 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times.” Jerusalem's endurance through all of this history has made it one of the world’s oldest cities.

Although the city remains the center of conflict between Israeli and Palestinian governments, Jerusalem serves as Israel’s central city, especially in the sectors of government, religion, and education. Jerusalem boasts of the finest schools teaching Hebrew and Arabic such as the prestigious Hebrew University of Jerusalem, which was among the top 100 universities ranked by the Times Higher Education World Rankings in 2008. Other notable higher learning institutions in Jerusalem include Al-Quds University, the Jerusalem College of Technology, Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, and Bezalel Academy of Art and Design.
