Rome’s history spans more than 2,500 years. In 2007, Rome was declared the 11th most widely visited city in the world by the Euromonitor International Top City Destinations Ranking. The city’s heritage includes grand architecture of its ancient civilization such as the Colosseum, the Vatican Museums, and academies. The Middle Age and the Renaissance were a significant period for the city became one of the foci of intellectual and educational growth. The Renaissance also saw the creation of more towns, bridges, public spaces, and churches such as the Sistine Chapel, the St. Peter’s Basilica, Piazza Navona, and Ponte Sisto. Rome is currently bidding to host the 2020 Summer Olympics.
The City Brands Index 2006 declares Rome as the second most historical, educational, cultural, and beautiful city in the world. This is evident in the city’s major centers for higher education comprising several universities, colleges, and academies. In 1303, La Sapienza was established and today is the largest university in Europe and the second-largest in the world, with 147,000 students. The university is also included in the 150 best schools in the world. Other pontifical/international universities and institutes also include the British School at Rome, Istituto Europeo di Design, American University of Rome, John Felice Rome Center (Loyola University Chicago), St. John’s University, French School in Rome, the Universita Campus Bio-Medico, and the Pontifical Gregorian University.
