Rome’s history spans more than 2,500 years. In 2007, Rome was declared the 11th most widely visited city in the world by the Euromonitor International Top City Destinations Ranking. The Middle Age and the Renaissance were a significant period for the city became one of the foci of intellectual and educational growth. The Renaissance also saw the creation of more towns, bridges, public spaces, and churches such as the Sistine Chapel, the St. Peter’s Basilica, Piazza Navona, and Ponte Sisto.
