Although learning in Japan began with the adoption of Chinese teachings and philosophy in the 6th century, the Japanese have long since established a distinct culture and education system of their own. In 1872 as Japan modernized it began opening schools and formal modern universities – all of which would play a central role in the country’s economic recovery and growth after World War II. Students enrolling in these universities have increased to a population of 2.8 million in 276 institutions in 2005. Popular courses among students in Japan’s universities include social sciences, accounting, business, law, engineering, humanities, and education. Japan’s higher education and the quality of universities is recognized internationally. The Institute of International Education ranked the country as the 6th most popular study abroad destination in 2010, comprising 24,842 international students. The Times Higher Education—World University Rankings (2010/2011) also lists 5 Japanese universities in the top 100 rankings: the University of Tokyo (8th), Kyoto University (18th), Osaka University (50th), Tokyo Institute of Technology (56th), and Tohoku University (57th). 33 Japanese Universities are in the top 100 Asian University Rankings. Japan has the third largest economy in the world and a major leader in science, technology and industry.
