Besancon is particularly suited for the kind of experience we seek for our students: the smaller size of the city and the small number of Americans studying there allow for easier cultural exchanges and acquisition of language skills. The academic program in Besancon begins with an intensive plunge into French. All students are enrolled in a language program designed to bring their oral skills up to a level where they can communicate and understand the French they hear all around them. Participants are then enrolled both at the French university as well as in French courses for foreign students at the Centre de Linguistique Appliquee - (C.L.A). Full-year students as well as those enrolled for the fall/winter and winter/spring program take courses in both of these settings. Fall term students take most of their courses at the C.L.A. A few courses are organized especially for Knox students. One of these courses is centered on regional history and philosophy and features visits to local sites, such as the Utopian city constructed in the 18th century at Arc-et-Senans. The courses students take depend on their individual academic program. At least half of the students who go on the Knox Program are not French majors; these students usually take at least one course in their major field at the regular French university. Less
