The center of government of the Mexican Union, Mexico City is the capital of Mexico. The original city of Tenochtitlan was built by the Aztecs in 1325 and colonized by the Spaniards in 1519. The Spanish conquistadors led by Hernan Cortes razed the city of Tenochtitlan and built the colonial Mexico City. Much of the city’s heritage comes from Spanish colonists who, in reconstructing the city, obliterated traces of the Aztec Empire. Colonial city architecture today includes the Torre Latinoamericana, Plaza de la Constitucion, Castle of Chapultepec, Paseo de la Reforma, Monument of Benito Juarez, and the Arcos Towers. The 2008 Global Cities Index rated Mexico City an Alpha global city and is considered one of the major financial centers in North America. The city has an estimated population of 21.2 million, making it the 5th most populous city on earth.

The National Autonomous University of Mexico established in 1551 is the second oldest university in Latin America. It also ranked 45th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings in 2009. The National Polytechnic Institute is the city’s 2nd largest university. Other higher learning institutions include the Universidad Panamericana, Universidad La Salle, Universidad del Valle de Mexico, the Metropolitan Autonomous University, the Universidad Tecnologica de Mexico, and the Centro de Investigacion y Docencia Economica (CIDE).
