Starr-Middlebury School in China, in cooperation with CET Academic Programs, offers immersion opportunities in the language and culture in three distinct locations: Beijing, Hangzhou, and Kunming.
Intended for students with an intermediate to advanced level of Chinese language, the program structure, including housing with Chinese roommates, is designed to expose students to an environment that will build upon their foundation of Chinese while rapidly increasing their knowledge of the language and culture.
Students enrolled in the School in China take all of their courses in Chinese, including content-based electives and the unique one-on-one tutorial. Living with Chinese roommates, students use their language skills in a relaxed environment outside of the classroom. Students in all locations have the opportunity to spend January term in Beijing preceding, following, or in-between the fall or spring semester.
Hangzhou, the flagship site of the School in China, offers a broad-based curriculum in humanities, with a focus on history and religious studies. The multi-ethnic city of Kunming, located in southwest China, will attract students interested in anthropology, social sciences, and environmental sciences. Finally, as China’s capital and center for political, economic, and cultural life, the program in Beijing is designed for students with interests in political science, economics, and the arts. Less
Even if you have good Chinese skills, this program will allow you to benefit greatly. You'll have a Chinese roommate which helps a lot, The language pledge was very helpful - I had studied Chinese for 7 years and just did a summer at Shanghai, but my Chinese at Hangzhou improved an incredible amount in just a semester.
All classes were taught in Chinese (also very helpful), the chinese roommate was great, and I played pickup soccer wi... Read more
I loved the city and the atmosphere of the college and the program but many aspects of the classes and setup were very frustrating and seemingly unfair. For example classes were divided after one oral test into different sections, one of which went on a paid field trip every week, the other which recieved no special treatment or activities at all. Academics are quality, you have a Chinese roommate & a language pledge (you can only speak Chinese). The ZUT university location is great -- you are close to the real culture of China, further away from tourist destinations. The program's academic administration is amazing, most of the teachers are good. There is a little bit of a divide between Chinese and Americans in some cases, but in some cases the relationships are fantastic and enriching. Read more
The program overall was a great experience; however I wish the administration which organized the trips and overall activities through CEI was more organized. Otherwise, classes were great and the teachers were awesome. I loved living in Hangzhou, because it is a much more relaxed city compared to big cities like Shanghai or Beijing but is still a good mix of urban and suburban mix. Definitely recommend going here! This program is fantastic for language acquisition. The language pledge ensures that you are only speaking Chinese all the time. If your primary goal in study abroad is to dramatically increase your Chinese communication skills, this is a great program. Cultural exploration is more on your own shoulders. Read more
I had a really good time abroad. My language skills increased ten fold and now I feel confident in my fluency. The classes were fine, the one on one was amazing but the others were not too challenging. We all had Chinese roommates which worked out for the most part. Some people had to switch roommates. Hangzhou was a great city, pretty, not many foreigners which was a plus. There was no partying on campus, we all went out after to the many clubs ... Read more

Overall it was a great experience, though I thought the academics were a little too strenuous to both get good grades and go out. As someone who likes to party Hangzhou provides a great experience, but not too much opportunity to party with locals. Read more
