After breaking from Spain in the 16th century the Dutch Republic exploded into the world's greatest international center of commerce, art and learning – and Leiden University (founded in 1575 by William of Orange, and today the oldest in the Netherlands) became the home of intellectual giants of the Renaissance like Descartes, Grotius, and Spinoza. Today the Dutch higher education system involves two types of institutions: research universities and vocational universities. The THE-QS World University Rankings 2010 reported 12 Dutch higher learning institutions in the top 200: University of Amsterdam, Leiden University, Utrecht University, Delft University of Technology, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Maastricht University, Eindhoven University of Technology, University of Groningen, Wageningen University, Free University of Amsterdam, University of Twente, and Radboud Universiteit Niimegen.
