From the word Amstelredamm, which literally means “a dam in the river Amstel”, Amsterdam became one of the world’s most important centers of commerce, art, exploration and learning in the Renaissance. With a population of about 7 million, Amsterdam is the largest city in the Netherlands. In July 2010, Amsterdam’s 17th century canals called Grachtengordel was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. According to Wikipedia, the city’s main attractions such as the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, and the red light district invite over 3.66 million foreign visitors every year. Amsterdam also boasts one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world – the Hortus Botanicus. Amsterdam’s colleges and universities are also among the top performing in the world. The city houses two main universities: Vrije Universiteit and the University of Amsterdam. The Mines ParisTech International Professional Classification of Higher Education Institutions 2011 includes Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the world’s 392 leading higher education institutions. Amsterdam is also home to world-class art schools like the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
