The education system in New Zealand is renowned around the world for quality colleges and universities. Founded by British colonists, the system of higher education in the country still resembles that of the United Kingdom in the use of lectures, labs, and tutorials. At present, New Zealand is home to 8 state universities: the Auckland University of Technology, Lincoln University, Massey University, University of Auckland, University of Canterbury, University of Otago, University of Waikato, and the Victoria University of Wellington. According to the QS World University Ranking 2010 includes the University of Auckland at the 28th spot. The Institute of International Education ranks New Zealand as the 20th leading study abroad destination. The Programme for International Student Assessment also lists New Zealand’s academic system as top 7 among other nations.
