Civilization in Peru dates to before the Incan Empire. Although it left no oral or written records of an ancient education system in Peru scholars have found relics that suggest existence of informal learning through metalwork, textiles, and ceramics. The colonization of Peru led to instructions of Roman Catholic teachings and the foundation of formal academic institutions such as universities and colleges. Higher education is prized in Peruvian culture, and Peruvians are known to show great respect for professors and college graduates. The first university opened in 1551—the Universidad Nacional Major de San Marcos. Today, Peru is the 25th most popular study abroad destination among American students (Institute of International Education report 2010).
