Cusco

Founded in circa 1100 AD, Cuzco was first occupied by the Killke tribe in 900 AD. Eventually, the arrival of the Incas made Cusco the capital of the empire. Then in 1532, the Incan empire was invaded by the Spanish Conquistadors and introduced the natives to Christianity. The Spaniards built a number of churches, convents, and schools in the region. In 1650, a major earthquake damaged most of these infrastructures. Years later, American explorer Hiram Bingham discovered the ruins of Machu Picchu in 1911.

The world voted for Machu Picchu as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. Other famous tourist sites from the Incan and Spanish period of the city include the Ruins of Sacsayhuaman, the sculpture garden at Chuquipalta, Cathedral of Santo Domingo, Plaza de Armas, and the Jesuit Church of la Compania. Several of Cusco’s cultural heritages are found in well-preserved museums today such as the Santa Catalina Convent and Art Museum, Museo de Historia Regional, Museo Palacio Municipal de Arte Contemporaneo, Museo Arqueologico Koricancha, Museo de Arte Popular, and the Centro Oosqo de Arte Nativo.
