Lima was founded by Spanish colonist Francisco Pizarro in 1535 who originally named the city “Ciudad de los Reyes” or City of Kings. Throughout the Spanish rule, Lima became the most important city in Peru. Today, Lima has a population of around 9 million people and remains as the 5th largest city in South America, following Mexico City, Rio de Janiero, Buenos Aires, and Sao Paolo. The city is also one of the major industrial and economic centers in South America with over 7000 factories a GDP per capita of $20,000. Due to strong Spanish influence, Lima is characteristically Catholic. The city’s infrastructure reflects the period of Spanish era – the Spanish baroque, Spanish Neoclassicism, and Spanish Colonial architecture. Among these cultural influences include the Historic Center of Lima hailed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 that includes the Monastery of San Francisco, the Torre Tagle Palace, several museums (like Museum of National History and Museum of the Nation), the Plaza Mayor, and many others.

The New World’s oldest higher learning institution can be found in Lima, the National University of San Marcos built in 1551. Other important academic institutions in Lima include the Universidad Nacional de Ingenieria, Universidad Nacional Federico Villareal, Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina, National University of Callao, Pontifica Universidad Catolica del Peru, Universidad de Lima, Universidad del Pacifico, and Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola.
