Poland is home to the world's first Ministry of Education --- established by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's Commission of National Education in 1773. Since then, the Polish education system has undergone significant changes, and become more defined by Western European standards. World-renowned universities in Poland include the Jagellonian University, Warsaw University, and the Adam Mickiewicz University. Other prominent universities in Poland include the Warsaw University of Technology, Warsaw Medical Academy, Medical University in Lodz, the Nicolas Copernicus University in Torun. The UNESCO-CEPES European Centre for Higher Education reported that in 2001, Polish public colleges and universities had a total of 1,224,600 students.
