Students have often told us the Reading Program has been a life-changing experience.
You will earn a minimum of 15 academic credits per semester in a broad range of courses.
Think an experience like this is beyond your reach? We can help you arrange for it. Tuition and room and board costs are the same as for a semester or year on our Lynchburg campus, and your Randolph College financial aid applies to this program as well. Students attending other colleges and universities who wish to apply to the program have access to both merit and other need-based scholarships and grants.
Admission is competitive but within your grasp if you are a dedicated student. So start planning for your year abroad as soon as possible. Students from many other U.S. institutions have joined our program in recent years. Less
I participated in the Reading Abroad program a long, long, long time ago, yet the experiences and memories of that year in England have stayed with me, as have the friendships made. I now have kids entering college age, who I took last year to meet and get to know my friends from Reading and their families. My Reading buds and I picked up like 30 years had not passed, and the kids became fast friends with their British counterparts. The next g... Read more
It was one of the best years of my life, certainly the highlight of my college years. It could still be the best year of my life, but I do enjoy married life and having children, and my career too!! The program was just excellent, and opportunities to travel were abundant. I just felt immersed, and was so involved that I hardly missed home. Read more
Great course selections - I particularly enjoyed a one-on-one tutorial on C. S. Lewis taken in Oxford. Easy access to planes and trains for travel both in the UK and on the continent. Excellent and caring staff and administrators. Full access to university clubs and amenities. And the living situation builds strong ties to fellow students following return to the states and after graduation. Read more

I loved every minute of my study aboard time. I was an alternate at first and got into the program because someone else didn't want to go. I can't imagine my college experience any other way. Read more

The year in Reading was truly a life changing experience for me and one that I think of often. Some of my closest friends remain the women I studied with in Reading, and I cherish the close bonds that we formed with one another, the faculty and the university students. The travel opportunities during the breaks were wonderful as were the weekend trips we took once a term as part of our seminar course. I can't say enough good things about this ... Read more

I've been in England for nearly a week now, and I think I can safely say that I'm in love.
I'm in love with a country-one that is quirky, humorous, beautiful, and exciting.
Take, for example, a billboard seen from the top seat of a double-decker bus headed into Reading. It was an advert for coffee, featuring the 'What Not To Wear' ladies. It advised women to 'lift their cups'-get it?
And in the section of Reading in which we live, Earley, ther... Read more
I really believe "Randolph College: The World in Britain" has something for everyone. I took some wonderful classes, made excellent friends. got to explore England, and fulfill my passion for volunteering. While there I volunteered at a local primary school and a camp for children with cancer. I also got to stay with a Host family for a long weekend. The professors are incredibly supportive and have a long history with the program. I had some ser... Read more
With the opportunity to study, travel and live abroad for either a semester or a full year, this program at the University of Reading has more to offer than most study abroad programs. Established in 1968, the track record of The World in Britain program speaks volumes year after year, as participating students have enhanced their educations. This program is unique in that if a course needed for a student is not available within the abundant cu... Read more
The beauty of this program is the emphasis on living in and being a part of whatever town or city you are in. I lived in the town of Reading, and attended Reading University. The academic program is, of course, fantastic. But I also received a cultural education that can't be found between books. There is ample time given to overnight field trips, jaunts into London to see plays, and plenty of free time (i.e. vacation) at Christmas and early ... Read more
I would recommend this program to anyone interested in studying in England. It has a "best of both worlds" quality in that you are surrounded by other American students, yet have lots of interaction with the University students as well. It was great to have my American housemates to explore with and discover a new culture together. Reading is also only a 20 min. train ride from London, so it is very convenient for sight-seeing, as well as travell... Read more
My Reading experience was invaluable to my education. Traveling was a new concept for me, but this program made me feel comfortable in terms of personal safety, value of investment, and educational experiences. The program allowed and encouraged me to travel beyond the campus and experience the world as a classroom. Read more
I wouldn't trade my year abroad in England for anything. Honestly. I considered many programs and many locations (Argentine, France, Ghana, and several others!) before deciding that the Reading program was right for me. Initially, two things drew me in. One, I liked the overall structure of the program (e.g. being on a English campus while also being closely tied to an American campus). Two, the lack of a language barrier was a huge bonus. As a m... With the houses just off the Reading University campus, excellent tutors and lectors from Reading and surrounding universities, and the proximity to London, one can study history, for example, and then go see it firsthand. It was an amazing experience and opened my life to the world. I went on the third year of the program and it was well established and has only gotten better over the past 45 years. Read more

The opportunity to dance in London, provided by Randolph-Macon is an incredible privilege. Dancers of all levels in the Reading program can take advantage of the city of London while improving their skill at any studio. At least, that is the over-simplified version of the experience.

February 18, a Wednesday, was unusually eventful even for me. Seminar class was at 9:30 AM and today Dr. Ivy himself was teaching (All hail Dr. Ivy!). The subject was Thomas Gray's Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard. I've heard that poem discussed in three separate classes now, and I still say the wrong things about it. Mournful knells, owls, twilight, and graves just thrill me right out of any ability to articulate. If I even had it to begi... Read more
Being in England, I have decided, is rather like being in an alternate universe: things are subtly but definitely different. Cars are a little smaller (with nary an SUV in sight), and they come at you from the wrong way. The first few days after I arrived, crossing the street required nothing so much as a gigantic leap of faith and the belief that I wasn't meant to die in the middle of a Reading road. You look over at where the driver is supposed... Read more

I did this program back in 2007-2008 and it really was one of the best experiences I have ever had. The academic environment is very unique in that we got to experience classes at a large university as well as one-on-one learning time with venerated university faculty and program lecturers. The best classes I had were the ones where it was just me and the professor discussing topics over tea and biscuits. The cultural immersion is also crucial to... Read more
I graduated in 2004, and my year abroad in the Reading program is still the best year of my life, for many reasons--the opportunity to take tutorials with Oxford professors, the proximity of Reading to London and the continent, and the sheer wonderfulness of the program director.
