Avoid This Program
The only reason my trip was not a total waste was the city itself. Rome is amazing and spending time painting and drawing in the city was invaluable experience and absolutely incredible. On the other hand, the program was very poorly run with no discernable organization or planning. The woman in charge and supposedly the painting instructor, Carole Robb, was hardly present and did nothing to add to my experience. She is self-important to the point of delusion, disrespectful, generally condescending and unpleasant to be around and constantly appeared drunk or hungover. The few other instructors on her staff were incredibly nice, knowledgeable and helpful but were held back by her poor administration and lack of competence. If you can manage to organize your time, trip and accommodations with any degree of competency you would be better off taking your money and organizing an independent trip with friends or on your own.

Rome Art Program Mixed Feelings.
Reviewed by Meh. on .
I attended this program on the understanding that it would be an in-depth, high intensity work out in plein air painting, working specifically in watercolour and drawing to develop an advanced technique in understanding depth and form of a location. I am not a beginner level artist, i do not work in abstract forms, and i was expecting a structured timetable of locations, intentions for the day, and outcomes, yet i felt we were often pushed to create works that often bore no resemblance whatsoever to our amazing surroundings, and we were never given an itinerary, but were rather informed as late as 11pm the night before, sometimes that morning, of what we were to be doing that day - the explanation for this from the head of the program was that, as artists, it would be obscene to work to a structured timetable. Painting took a very unexpected ancient leap ahead of drawing on the levels of importance and amount of class time allocated, mixed media and representational work were heavily discouraged, and teacher-student interaction during the classes themselves was overwhelmingly minimal. Some people got a kick out of this course and will go again, I personally found it disheartening that I have come out of this experience feeling that I have learnt nothing, and gained nothing but a few rather childish scrawls this late in my academic career.
